Choi, J-K., & Bowles, S. (2007). The coevolution of parochial altruism and war. Science, 318, 636-640.

"Parochial altruism could have evolved if parochialism promoted intergroup hostilities and the combination of altruism and parochialism contributed to success in these conflicts. Our game-theoretic analysis and agent-based simulations show that under conditions likely to have been experienced by late Pleistocene ad early Holocene humans, neither parochialism nor altruism would have been viable single, but by promoting group conflict, they could have evolved jointly."

Agents are
--Tolerant (T) vs. Parochial (P)
--Altruistic (A) vs. Non-altruistic (N)

Simulation algorithm: 
  • Create 20 groups with 26 agents each, all TN 
  • Group interaction
    • There could be way -- determined by fraction of individuals who are parochial and whether one side has an advantage.

Bah. I got sidetracked. The gist is: Parochial altruists cooperate with in-group members but not outgroup members. Warface happens if there are outgroup-haters in each group, and if there is a power disparity. Increased warfare allows parochial altruism to evolve. I need to read this more carefully soon.
